Cotswold personal trainer joins national panel at Retirement Living Show to promote fitness in later life

Stroud-based personal trainer James Hilton, founder of online fitness platform Jim’s Gym, will be speaking at this year’s Retirement Living Show as part of a panel exploring the role of exercise in later life.

James will join the line-up on day two of the show offering his insight into how retirement communities can make fitness more accessible, enjoyable and sustainable for older adults.

The Retirement Living Show brings together sector leaders from across the UK and is now in its third year. This year’s programme includes talks and panels focused on innovation, inclusivity, and improving quality of life for residents in later-living communities.

James, who launched Jim’s Gym to support people over 55 with fun, easy-to-access online workouts, says the key to long-term success is making movement something people actually look forward to.

“There’s a real misconception that getting older means slowing down. I work with hundreds of people in their 60s, 70s and beyond who are stronger and more mobile than they were a decade ago, because they’ve found a way to move that works for them,” said James.

“This panel is a great opportunity to talk about what really motivates people to stay active, especially when traditional gyms don’t appeal. Fitness should feel fun, social and doable, not like a chore.”

Jim’s Gym has developed into more than an online fitness platform. It’s now a supportive, growing community for older adults who want to stay active and connected from home. The platform offers a mix of live daily workouts and an extensive on-demand library, with sessions ranging from strength and balance to tai chi, pilates, and dancercise.

In addition to fitness, the community aspect has become a key part of its appeal. Members regularly take part in a virtual book club and online art classes, creating opportunities for social connection, creative expression, and mutual encouragement. These added elements have played an important role in helping members stay engaged and accountable over the long term.

Molly Benson, Content Producer for the Retirement Living Show said “We’re thrilled to welcome James Hilton as a panellist to the Retirement Living Show. His work with Jim’s Gym is a brilliant example of how a creative, person-centred approach can support healthier living.”

The Retirement Living Show 2025 takes place on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th October at the NEC, Birmingham. The two-day event brings together operators, developers, local authorities and sector professionals to explore the future of retirement living, with a packed programme of panels, speakers, and exhibitors.

James Hilton will appear as a panellist on Wednesday 9th October, contributing to a discussion on the importance of fitness and active lifestyles in later life alongside Liz Fairbank, Care & Lifestyle Director of McCarthy Stone, and Kate Jarvis, Wellbeing Lead for ExtraCare Charitable Trust.
