Dr Simon Opher MP raises concerns over Palantir and NHS data control

Most people have heard of Palantir Technologies, and know it has links to the NHS, but many are unsure what the company actually does or why its growing role in UK public services is controversial.

Palantir is a major US technology company with a turnover of around $4.5bn, specialising in data analytics software used across defence, intelligence, and security sectors. It is widely known for its work with US government agencies, including immigration enforcement bodies such as ICE, and for defence-related contracts internationally. Its co-founder, Peter Thiel, is also a prominent political donor in the United States.

The company has expanded its involvement in the NHS since 2020, securing contracts worth hundreds of millions of pounds to support data integration across complex and fragmented NHS systems.

Some of these contracts have been awarded through procurement processes that have attracted criticism and calls for greater transparency. Concerns have also been raised by campaigners and commentators about the level of scrutiny applied to parts of Palantir’s work in the UK public sector.

Critics argue that the increasing reliance on large private technology firms in core public infrastructure raises important questions about data governance, accountability, and long-term control of sensitive information. Palantir itself maintains that its systems are designed to support public services by improving data integration and operational efficiency.

There has also been public debate around the appropriate scope of data use within such systems, and the safeguards required to ensure that personal information is handled strictly within legal and contractual boundaries.

The Government is being urged to reconsider its long-term relationship with Palantir, including the contractual break clauses due in future NHS agreements, and to ensure that ethics, transparency, and security remain central to public sector procurement.

Campaigners say that as the NHS becomes increasingly data-driven, clear safeguards are essential to maintain public trust and ensure sensitive health data remains fully protected.
