Sladewood Academy, a specialist primary school in Stroud dedicated to supporting children with moderate and additional learning difficulties, is celebrating an extraordinary achievement by one of its supporters.
Stan Bradbury, a devoted 72-year-old grandfather of one of the school’s pupils, has completed a 125-mile run over 8 days to raise funds for Sladewood’s new inclusive playground project. His initial target was £2,000, but thanks to overwhelming community support, he has raised an incredible £7,450 so far.
Stan explained his motivation: “My granddaughter Maggie attends Sladewood Academy, a very lovely special needs school in Stroud. Maggie has a genetic condition which means she is non-verbal and has global developmental delays. She loves her school and has made great progress with her communication, doing things we never thought possible thanks to the dedicated staff at Sladewood. This run was my way of giving something back.”
The run took Stan from his home in Weybridge, Surrey to Sladewood Academy—a total of 125 miles, averaging 15–18 miles per day between 8th and 15th September. His route followed the Wey Navigation Canal, the Basingstoke Canal, the Kennet and Avon Canal, and the final stretch of the Thames Path.
Sladewood Academy is aiming to raise around £80,000 to create a fully accessible and inclusive playground for its pupils. The project is being completed in two phases:
- Phase 1: Construction of a safe and inclusive walkway to ensure all children, regardless of mobility or sensory needs, can safely access the playground. This stage was completed during the summer holidays.
- Phase 2: Development of a purpose-built play space designed to support sensory and emotional well-being, enhance communication, and encourage imaginative play.
Katy Hanna, Headteacher of Sladewood Academy, said: “We’re incredibly proud to share that Stan has taken on this inspiring fundraising challenge in support of our school. His incredible effort will help us bring more equipment to the playground project, supporting children’s social and emotional growth. At Sladewood, we know children thrive in outdoor environments, and with the right resources, they can achieve so much.”
