As Bonfire Night and the festive season approach, The Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home (CDCH) is asking the public to consider a kinder way to celebrate — one that keeps animals safe, calm, and cared for.
Instead of spending on fireworks, the charity is encouraging people to “Buy a Dog a Dinner” by donating the cost of a fireworks display to support animals during what can be one of the most stressful times of the year.
What Fireworks Feel Like to Animals
For many pets, fireworks are not a source of joy — they are a source of fear.
The sudden, unpredictable bangs, flashes of light, and vibrations can leave animals anxious and disoriented.
According to the RSPCA, 62% of dogs, 54% of cats, and 55% of horses show signs of distress during firework events.
Every year, thousands of pets go missing on Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve, with most disappearances occurring between 5 pm and 11 pm.
“Fireworks can be terrifying for animals — they don’t understand what’s happening,” said a spokesperson for The Cotswolds Dogs & Cats Home. “We see first hand how fear affects pets, especially those who’ve already experienced trauma or abandonment. That’s why we’re asking the community to show compassion this year.”

Funds raised through the Buy a Dog a Dinner appeal will help CDCH provide:
- Warm, comfortable kennels where dogs can retreat during noisy evenings
- Enrichment toys to keep them occupied and reduce stress
- Soothing classical music to calm nerves
- Extra comfort and reassurance from the dedicated animal care team
“Every small act of kindness helps,” added the spokesperson. “A donation that might otherwise be spent on fireworks can instead provide comfort, warmth, and safety to a frightened animal. Together, we can make a huge difference.”
