The Carlton Club has confirmed the return of former chairman Nick Housden, who will once again help lead the popular Stroud social club.
In a statement to Stroud Times, the Trustees, Committee Members and staff said they were “delighted to confirm the return of Nick Housden and his leadership group, who will help guide the club forward over the next ten years.”
During Mr Housden’s previous tenure, The Carlton Club was brought back from the brink of closure. Under his leadership, the club successfully reopened and stabilised, delivering a series of major capital projects including a new roof, a new heating system and essential building upgrades that secured the long-term future of the premises.

The statement continued: “It is regrettable the manner in which his original tenure came to an end. The relevant parties have since apologised and now formally acknowledge that Nick and his leadership group were fully cleared of any wrongdoing and are the right people to lead The Carlton Club through its next chapter.”
Looking ahead, the leadership group plans to re-establish The Carlton Club as a vibrant, member-focused venue, offering a wide range of sporting activities including pool, skittles and darts. Plans also include the reinstatement of live sports and the delivery of a diverse programme of events and activities.
Commenting on his return, Nick Housden said: “I am pleased to be asked back, working with a fantastic group to help the club through its current challenges. Thank you to everyone who has helped, supported and worked tirelessly to make this happen. Now is the right time to draw a line under the difficulties of the past year and move forward together. The club means an awful lot to many people, and continuing the work we started to restore it to its former glory is something the group and I are genuinely excited about.”
The Carlton Club is now welcoming applications for new members. With local parking, multiple bars, a range of sporting activities, live sports showings and a friendly, welcoming team, the club looks forward to opening its doors fully to members once again.
