The outpouring of solidarity and togetherness at the rally in Stroud on Saturday, 10th August showed the best of the humanity we all share.
We have been horrified to see anti-Muslim rhetoric flare up in response to the wholly unrelated tragic murders in Southport. It was then a small step by the far-right to feed the claim that refugees, especially those driven to make dangerous sea journeys, are responsible for all that is wrong in the UK today.
This is manifest nonsense, as well as heartless. But as counter rallies across the whole country swiftly showed, there is far greater value given to diversity in our communities, welcome for difference and support for people in need no matter where they come from.
The rally at Wallbridge demonstrated this same message, warmly and joyfully.
The urgent need for safe passage for refugees to escape conflict, persecution and climate change world-wide grows every year. Only international agreement for safe routes and proper reception by wealthier countries, including the UK, will end the spectacle of people still crowding into little dinghies to cross the Mediterranean or the English Channel.
