Dear Editor,
Despite amalgamating with Marling School in 1965, the Stroud Boys’ Technical School Old Boy Association still has a thriving membership of nearly 300.
A buffet lunch is being held at the Old Crown, Paganhill on Friday, September 20 and all Old Boys are welcome.
With its origins in Brimscombe Polytechnic, the Stroud Craft School welcomed its first pupils on August 29th, 1910, in newly erected buildings in Beards Lane.
Post First World War it became the Central School and post Second World War it acquired its last identity as the Stroud Boys’ Technical School.
A selective secondary school for able boys, it offered an excellent broad-based curriculum to ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level with superb technical and scientific workshops and laboratories.
On July 22, 1965 it closed its doors for the last time as an independent establishment and on September, 9, 1965 all boys transferred to Marling School.
The old Technical buildings served as the lower school up to the third year.
The Technical School lives on within Marling. Two Houses were named after School Headmasters: Frank Fuller and W.G. Elliott.
Marling is now a Special Engineering Academy, carrying on the excellence and expertise imparted to boys at the old Technical School.
Illustrious Technical School alumni include Cider With Rosie author, Laurie Lee, and international golf star, Sid Brews. The Sid Brews Trophy is still competed for locally each year.
The School Register records 3011 boys passing through the doors between 1910 and 1965. The Secretary maintains all known historic records and artefacts.
