Letter to the Editor: wild swimming brigade to blame for Stratford Park pool’s decline

MOST READ

Dear Editor,

Once the heart of summer fun, Stratford Park outdoor pool now struggles to attract swimmers as rivers and lakes lure the new generation of enthusiasts.

While I have every sympathy with the current outcry over the closure of Stratford Park outdoor pool, I feel the growing trend for wild swimming is partly to blame.

As a child in the 1980s, I have fond memories of spending every summer at the outdoor pool – no suncream, no mobile phones, just endless days of fun, and, in my carefree 20s during the 1990s, the occasional late-night skinny dip.

Times have sadly changed. Now, people choose to take a dip in our rivers and lakes, and the outdoor pool has slipped down the list as the best place for a splash. I do hope the pool is saved, and I wish all those working to make this happen the best of luck.
