An unexpected spell of warm, sunny weather in March has sparked an early start to barbecue season, leading to increased household spending on outdoor food.
In Nailsworth, butcher Paul Dowdeswell from Country Quality Meat reports a surge in demand for BBQ food.
“The boys decided to put grill sticks and kebabs out. Customers came in, noticed them, and constantly through the day, they were making more grill sticks and kebabs, which was really good,” he said.

While burgers remain a year-round staple, the warmer weather is shifting customer preferences toward a wider variety of barbecue options. “Predominantly, we sell burgers all year round. You’ll notice a spike in them, but then as it changes, you get your kebabs, chicken kebabs, venison kebabs, lamb and venison grill stick,” he added.
The seasonal change is also boosting morale among customers. “It makes you feel better – that time’s changing. People are smiling, a real nice spring-like feel to it.”
