Party time: Good On Paper celebrate 10th anniversary

MOST READ

Founded and run by Alex Hobbis (editor) and Adam Hinks (design) Good On Paper was launched in February 2015 to provide a definitive guide to festivals, arts, music, theatre, film, dance, literature and spoken word events in Stroud to both its residents and visitors.

As well as producing listings the magazine also supports the work of local artists, authors, musicians, filmmakers and other creatives. It also provides budding writers, photographers and filmmakers the opportunity to hone their skills and gain invaluable experience in print and media which they have used in furthering their own careers.

This year the publication has entered its 10th year and as part of their plans for celebrating such a mammoth milestone will be launching a unique, one-off fundraising art exhibition to be held at mulit-arts space Studio 18 in Brimbscombe featuring works by over 50 artists across the Stroud District.

Alex and Adam chose the artists by scouring through 116 back issues and the resulting list features sculpture, photography, illustration, paintings, screenprints and more including unique, limited edition and one-off pieces by the likes of celebrated illustrator Alex Merry, award winning filmmaker and illustrator Joe Magee, visionary artist and pioneer of Beauty Futurism Alex Box, creator of provocative pop paintings and the People’s Republic of Stroud Clay Sinclair, internationally renowned author, illustrator and writer Tom Percival, contemporary and ceramics artist Lorraine Robbins, sculptor Abigail Fallis – known for her commentary about over-consumption and consumerism – , mosaic artist Cleo Mussi and the highly acclaimed visual artist James Merry to name just a few…

Adam Hinks, Good On Paper co-founder said: “When we started this publication back in 2015 and we were pretty sure that we’d start to dry up for artists to feature but, it would seem all we did was create a platform for more and more artists to descend upon our little town living happily alongside the already established scene which has been building since long before us.

“Looking back over the previous issues of Good On Paper has brought back some fond memories and we’ve really enjoyed seeing all of the artists again as they’ve been dropping in their pieces. We are still blown away with the talent that keeps coming forward and as our beards grow greyer and our hair a little thinner we hope that this continues with the next generation of gifted people, some of whom have grown up with Good On Paper as a local staple on the table in their homes. Having the pleasure of seeing this town grow and progress with new projects and initiatives has been a huge joy. We have now had the GOP party at most large venues across the town with our original idea of moving it to a new space every year, so we thought it fitting that this year, our tenth, would see the party shown at two of the most important community projects / venues in the district.

“The Long Table is nothing short of incredible not only for what they have achieved in a relatively short time but with the togetherness and good spirit that they continue to bring forward, connecting communities with compassion, kindness and a nothing-is-too-hard attitude. Studio 18 and our good friend Zac are equally as important, offering a safe space for our younger residents to be themselves and gain confidence with opportunities to experience and work with the arts and music world in a cool space that’s not full of grown ups. Many of these young adults don’t often get the chance to experience what would be ‘normal’ to a city kid so I salute Zac and his crew for all they do.”

All works will be for sale with proceeds going to Good On Paper, Studio 18 and the artists, raising vital funds for the magazine (which remains a part time project) and the venue hosting it whilst also supporting the creators of the works.

“Good On Paper is a champion of the arts and a style icon in itself, serving as the lynchpin of an incredible pool of talent that reside in Stroud ” Zac Walsh, Studio 18
