Create a pollinators’ paradise with our sustainably grown native wildflower plug plants.
Wetland Wildflowers at WWT Slimbridge is a volunteer-led project growing native wildflowers as easy to grow plug plants from locally sourced seed. We want our plugs to support the creation and enhancement of wet grassland habitats and floodplain meadows reversing decades of decline.

Wildlife-rich floodplain meadows are not only beautiful, but beneficial; they provide flood mitigation, store substantial quantities of carbon and are incredibly biodiverse with meadows having up to 42 plants per square. This richness in turn supports numerous pollinators, mammals and birds.

Our plugs would be ideal for those creating or restoring wet grasslands or floodplain meadows such as landowners, farmers, developers or councils as well as people who want to create wildlife friendly areas at home. Despite being called wetland wildflowers our plants tolerate a wide variety of conditions and are as at home in a garden setting as in a meadow.

Dr Sue Kinsey Wetland Wildflower Coordinator at WWT Slimbridge said, “Although this is only our second year of running the wildflower project is already showing great results. With financial support from The Moto Foundation and the work of our incredible volunteers we are now in an excellent position to aid the recovery of the Severn Vale’s iconic floodplain meadows with our native and locally sourced wildflower plug plants.

“We are growing around 20 species in all including Bird’s-foot trefoil, Corky-fruited water-dropwort, Cowslip and Meadowsweet. All plants that we believe celebrate the mix of wildflowers that make Severn Vale meadows special. At the moment we have about 20,000 plants in stock.”
