Pub boss responds to economic challenges with new schedule

A pub boss has announced a series of changes that will come into effect in the new year, as rising costs and increasing financial pressures continue to challenge the hospitality sector.

Landlord Wesley Birch, who runs the popular pub in Brimscombe and The Old Neighbourhood in Chalford, says the latest increases in wages and alcohol duty have pushed many independent pubs to a breaking point.

“Like many others, we’ve been heavily affected by the government’s ongoing demands and what feels like a continuing squeeze on small businesses,” Mr Birch said.

“Another rise in wages and alcohol duty is simply too much for us to absorb without making difficult but necessary changes. We were hoping for some relief for the hospitality sector, but instead we were met with yet another financial hit.”

Despite these challenges, Mr Birch emphasised that the pub remains firmly committed to its community.

“Our priority is securing the long-term sustainability of The Ship Inn,” he continued. “We’re taking pragmatic steps now so we can continue to serve our community for years to come. We’re streamlining—never compromising. Our customers deserve the best, and that promise won’t change.

“These adjustments are vital to securing our future,” he added. “We’re incredibly grateful for the continued loyalty and support of our guests. It’s thanks to them that we remain strong, even in tough times.”

As part of the measures, Mr Birch confirmed that the pub’s opening hours will be reduced. From January 1, and in order to “reflect this focus on efficiency and sustainability”, the pub will continue to open at 3pm but will close at 7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, except on quiz nights.
