The RSPCA has paid tribute to its former Vice President, Bill Oddie OBE, following his death at the age of 85, describing him as “one of nature’s best friends, fiercest champions and most iconic defenders”.
Chief Executive Jo Rowland said everyone at the animal welfare charity was “deeply saddened” by the loss of the broadcaster, comedian, musician and lifelong wildlife campaigner.
“While his comedy, music and, of course, work with The Goodies delighted so many, his tireless commitment to British wildlife will define so much of his extraordinary life,” she said.
Rowland praised Oddie as an “exceptional and steadfast champion for the natural world”, whose passion for birds and wildlife inspired generations.
She highlighted his long-standing work alongside the RSPCA, including campaigning against government plans to cull badgers, and said many of the charity’s wildlife rescuers had been inspired to pursue animal welfare through his broadcasting and his enthusiasm for British birds.
“Nature has lost one of its best friends, fiercest champions and most iconic defenders,” she added. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the countless people he inspired to spend time birdwatching, to cherish nature, and to build a kinder world for animals.”
