Silver Ashes: ‘Evo’ to captain England Over70s against Australia

JOHN Evans, of Frocester, will captain England O70s in their opening Silver Ashes clash against Australia at Colchester and East Essex CC on Sunday.

The Gloucestershire opener, who has been in superb form all summer, is joined in the squad by wicketkeeper Nigel Belletty, of Stoke Bishop.

Evans, aged 71, already has three caps to his name after helping England retain the ‘Grey Ashes’ Down Under earlier this year.

And ‘Evo, as he’s universally known, would like nothing more than to play a role in another Ashes triumph on home soil.

Evo said: “I’m so pleased, it’s a great honour.

“We had two trial games where I managed to get a few runs and I’ve also managed a few for Gloucestershire this season so hopefully I will be able to lead from the front.

“It’s amazing that the second game is being played at Wellington … I grew up half-a-mile from the ground and used to run round it as a kid so it will be lovely to go back.”

The three-match series continues on August 13 at Wellington before concluding at Maidenhead & Bray CC on August 20.

Ed Gordon Lennox, of Tarbarrow and Gloucestershire, was a key member of the England O60 squad which last month defeated the Aussies 3-2 to seal the Grey Ashes.
