Stroud District Council has won a national award in recognition of its outstanding work to protect the safety of its tenants.
The council was named the winner of the Safety & Compliance Training & Development Award at the Association of Safety and Compliance Professionals (ASCP) Awards. It highlights the council’s commitment to developing its workforce and fostering a strong health and safety culture within its housing service.
A key objective in the council’s recent housing service plan has been to prioritise the safety of tenants and properties. Through a comprehensive training and development programme, the council has ensured that its staff are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to maintain high standards of safety and compliance.
Over the past two years, more than 40 training courses have been completed, covering essential areas such as fire doors, asbestos, legionella, damp and mould, as well as playground inspections. In addition, eight trainee and apprenticeship roles have been created, and partnerships have been established with SGS College, City of Bristol College, local schools, and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service to provide practical on-site demonstrations and work experience opportunities.

“Winning this award is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our team. Our investment in training has resulted in a motivated, skilled and confident workforce, improved customer interactions, and higher levels of tenant satisfaction.
“Currently, 81% of our tenants report feeling satisfied that their home is safe. We are proud of the progress we’ve made and remain committed to developing our staff to ensure we continue to keep our tenants safe in their homes.”
In addition to increased tenant satisfaction, 80% of housing employees report feeling valued at work and supported in their development – further reinforcing the council’s commitment to a positive and inclusive working environment.
