Stroud author Joan Tuaño Rumsey has won “Best Meat Book” at the 31st Gourmand World Cookbook Awards for her debut cookbook, Steak Simplified.
The global award, often referred to as the “Oscars of food publishing,” recognises the best food and drink books from over 200 countries.
Joan, who moved to Stroud with her family in June, brings her multi-generation Filipino butchery heritage into a modern, accessible cookbook focused on empowering home cooks to make great steak with confidence. The book has gained international attention for its clear explanations, practical guidance, and celebration of quality ingredients — much of it inspired by her family’s longstanding butchery traditions and her experience working across the Philippines, UAE, and UK.
Stroud is known for being a hub of artists, writers, producers, and makers. Joan’s international win adds to the town’s growing reputation as a centre for creativity, food culture, and independent publishing.

“Stroud has such a supportive and inspiring creative community,” Joan says. “It’s an honour to bring this award home to a place that embraces diversity, artisan food, and independent talent. Steak Simplified is a celebration of my Filipino roots, my family’s craft, and the joy of helping people cook confidently at home.”
Steak Simplified breaks down everything home cooks need to know about steak — including how to choose cuts, understand marbling grades, trim meat, season properly, and cook with confidence. It is designed to be both educational and accessible, regardless of cooking experience.
Currently available at Knight’s Butchers, Stroud and Jesse Smith in Tetbury Upton. Steak Simplified is available online on Amazon, Meze Publishing, online at Waterstones and Blackwell’s and through select retailers.
