Stroud MP steps down from surgery role

Stroud MP Dr Simon Opher has decided to resign from his role as a partner at May Lane surgery in Dursley.

A GP for 28 years, Dr Opher revealed last month that he would continue to combine his MP duties with weekly surgeries as a GP, but the magnitude of his new role as MP has forced him to make a U-turn.

Dr Opher told Stroud Times: “I have decided after 29 years that I will resign as a partner at May Lane surgery. I will continue to do one or two surgeries a month but, sadly, I simply haven’t got the time to run the practice as well as be an MP.

“We are rated as an outstanding practice by the CQC, and that is testament to everyone involved. The team at May Lane is amazing.

“They need a partner who has time to take the practice forward. They have lots of fresh ideas and I’m really excited to see how the practice develops.

“The new doctors at May Lane are fantastic and I am looking forward to working alongside them, albeit in a reduced capacity. I will be keeping in touch, doing some surgeries and remaining a doctor. I am very pleased that I will still get to see some of my patients.”
