Table-topping Clanfield topple Shortwood

Clanfield 2 Shortwood 0 – Unisport Hellenic League Division 1

A goal in each half was good enough for table-topping Clanfield to send Wood home pointless after their trip to Oxfordshire on Saturday, writes Jim Cunneen.

Marcus Foxwell’s side should have taken the lead after 90 seconds.

Kent put Dobbins in and he beat keeper Haley but his shot lacked power and a defender was able to clear the ball off the line.

Just three minutes later, Kimber beat two defenders and unleashed a fierce shot that beat Thomas and smashed in off the underside of the bar.

Wood responded and dominated and Elkins was shown a yellow for bringing down Kent and Dan Gayner shot straight at Haley from a good position. Wood were playing some excellent football and Haley did well to claw away a cross from Smith and did even better to turn over a drive from Byrnes.

Although on the back-foot Clanfield, especially Kimber, looked dangerous when they pressed forward.

Wood started the second half brightly and Haley again denied Byrnes.

Clanfield had a golden chance to double their lead after sloppy defending presented Fullerton with a virtually open goal but he contrived to blaze the ball over from close range but after 68 minutes a good move ended with a low cross finding Reuben Harry, who scored from eight yards.

Wood rang the changes but Clanfield generally looked comfortable in defence and midfield and kept control to secure the points as Wood faded.

Shortwood: Thomas, Loveridge, Mace R (Sabally 72), Byrnes (Gayner A 61), Tryner, Lyons (Duncan 81), Molyneux (Price 75), Kent, Dobbins, Smith, Gayner D (Bowes 72)
