The big interview: Robbie Savage on supporting his players, John McMahon factor and family matters

Forest Green Rovers are in rude health ahead of their trip to Halifax Town tomorrow, sitting third in the early National League standings after taking two wins and a draw from their opening three matches.

Confidence is high at the Candriam Training Centre near Junction 13, where Rovers boss Robbie Savage met with Ash Loveridge and BBC Radio Gloucestershire’s Paul Furley to reflect on his side’s flying start, the challenges of managing a new-look squad, and the excitement building around the club’s attacking style of football.

Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage has reaffirmed his commitment to every member of the squad, promising unwavering support for players not included in the matchday lineup.

With a complete squad overhaul this season, the likes of Liam Sercombe, Adam May, Sean Long, Cian Harries and Harvey Bunker have been watching from the stands, but Savage is acutely aware of their predicament.

“We’ve carried a squad of 22 and there are lads who aren’t involved at the minute,” he told Stroud Times. “They know the situation — it’s down to them and their agents whether they want to stay, move permanently or go out on loan. Either way, I’ll support them.

“As a player myself, I always wanted to play. Football’s a short career, and if you’re not involved it can be frustrating. If it was me, I’d want to go and play rather than sit around.”

Despite those options, Savage made clear he has no intention of forcing players out or isolating them from the group.

“I don’t believe in making players train on their own. They train with us, they conduct themselves brilliantly, and if they choose to stay they’ll be treated like everyone else. But I also understand if they decide to move on for more football.”

Recruitment success

This summer saw 14 new arrivals, effectively creating a brand-new side. Savage credited the club’s recruitment team, led by sporting director Mark Bowen.

“The recruitment has been outstanding. We’ve lowered the average age, improved the club’s finances, and brought in players who fit the way we want to play. We’re always planning ahead too — we’ve got options lined up for every position if injuries happen.

“The players have gelled straight away. There are no excuses. Everyone knows their role, even the subs, and we’re ready to go.”

Much of the credit also goes to assistant manager John McMahon, who Savage says is vital to the project.

“John’s brilliant. The lads love his sessions — they’re intense, enjoyable, and top quality. I couldn’t do this without him. We plan things together, but he delivers them, and I trust him completely. He’s been a huge reason for our success so far.”

Attacking Philosophy and Fan Backing

Stroud Times recently invited 14-year-old fan Otto Carrington to submit a question to Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage. Otto asked how supporters can help fuel the team’s attacking style of play.

Savage was clear in his response: “It’s the noise, the energy. You can probably hear me shouting ‘forward, forward’ — that’s our style. We want to be relentless and ruthless, but the fans can lift us even more. Just enjoy it and get behind the team, because it must be a joy to watch right now.”

Savage also stressed the balance between attack and game management:
“I’m not naïve. At times we’ll need to manage games and not just throw everyone forward. But the mentality will always be to win matches and play on the front foot.”

Family Support

Away from football, Savage remains grounded by his family, who will be at their first home league game this weekend.

“I’m excited for them to be there. It’s been a busy few weeks, but to share it with them makes it all worthwhile. Whatever happens, I love what I do — and I know we’re building something really special here.”
