What’s on in Stroud this week: 17 – 23 August

As the summer holidays continue, it’s another busy week of community events across the Stroud district.

This week’s highlights include a fairy day at the Museum in the Park, a film screening at Stroud Brewery, music at the Long Table and the Prince Albert and the return of Slimbridge village produce show.

Find out more in our regular look at things coming up in Stroud and the wider district.

Regular and one off events

The Museum in the Park continues its summer holiday programme with a celebration of fairy folklore. Activities include traditional songs and stories, fairy folklore, a special Peter Pan sword school, and the chance to make a magic fairy wand to take home.

Stroud Brewery hosts a special screening of Field & Folk, a new documentary film celebrating the farmers, families and landscapes of the Cotswolds National Landscape. The screening is part of a tour of venues across the Cotswolds.

St Laurence’s Church is the venue for this pop-up show of more than 150 original paintings, prints, sculpture and mixed media artworks donated to Oxfam. All proceeds go to support Oxfam’s humanitarian and emergency work.

Popular local band and Stroud Farmers Market busking regulars Moonlighting bring their classic swing and Latin tunes and vocal harmonies to the Long Table. The band will be playing during dinner ahead of a special screening of Dirty Dancing at 8.15pm.

The finest gardeners in all of Slimbridge will gather at the village hall this Saturday to show off their produce, in a growing season that has boasted plentiful sun but next to no rain. Expect a wide range of fruits and vegetables from fertile Severn Vale gardens, alongside floral art and cookery.

Regarded by some as one of the finest ballad singers of his generation, Alan Burke is the former lead singer, guitarist and bodhran player from Irish band Afterhours. He boasts an extensive repertoire of traditional, contemporary and original songs in both the English and Irish languages.

Continuing this week

Gnome Bert and his friends have taken over the Painswick Rococo Garden for a special summer holiday gnome party trail. En route, participants will have the opportunity to discover what each gnome is bringing to the party, and enjoy interactive games, drawing activities and fun challenges.

Further afield

Malmesbury’s now-annual Petticoat Lane market brings a wide variety of stalls to the town centre, alongside food and live music. The event is part of Malmesbury Carnival & Festival, a month-long community celebration culminating in the carnival procession weekend in early September.
