Nailsworth Silver Band has announced the appointment of acclaimed musician Derick Kane as its new Musical Director.
Derick brings decades of musical and leadership experience to the role, having enjoyed a distinguished career as one of the country’s leading euphonium players. He previously served as Principal Euphonium for the Premier Band of The Salvation Army and has recorded numerous CDs, including four solo albums.
As a respected composer and arranger, many of his works already feature in the band’s summer programme.
Away from the concert stage, Derick has held a variety of music education roles, including peripatetic brass teacher, classroom music teacher and Head of Music. He also worked as a Music Training Specialist for The Salvation Army. He continues to perform as Solo Euphonium with Cinderford Band.
Since taking up the role, Derick has already led Nailsworth Silver Band at three performances, including its Summer Concert in Woodchester and bandstand concerts in Keynsham and Ross-on-Wye.
The Summer Concert, held on 12 July, showcased all three ensembles within Nailsworth Music Society. The Academy Band, conducted by Dr Pete Dillon, and the Brasshoppers learner group, led by Steve Fidler, also performed before the evening concluded with a joint performance by the Academy and Silver Bands under Derick’s baton.
Speaking about his appointment, Derick said: “After just a short time, a concert and some summer bandstands, I’m already aware of the commitment and enthusiasm of the players.
“I thank them for their welcome and look forward to sharing and making music together as part of the Nailsworth community.”
