What’s on in Stroud this week: 14 – 20 July

It’s the last week of term for Gloucestershire’s schoolchildren, and Stroud is recovering from the weekend’s heatwave with a week of very respectable summer temperatures.

This weekend is a no-holds-barred selection of local summer events, with Chalfest kicking off on Friday at France Lynch Pleasure Ground, Frampton-on-Severn hosting its annual sheep racing and Uley Brewery celebrating 40 years in business.

Plus, there’s a summer fayre in Leonard Stanley, a midsummer market at Stroud Brewery, a pub quiz at the Fresh Standard and an art exhibition at Lansdown Hall.

Regular and one off events.

The Fresh Standard Brewery at Merretts Mill hosts this special quiz in aid of Allsorts, the Stroud-based charity that helps disabled children and their families access everyday experiences. Teams of up to six people are welcome.

  • Chalfest – Fri 18 July, 4 – 9:30pm,  Sat 19 Jul, 11am – 9.30pm

Chalford’s biggest party returns to France Lynch Pleasure Ground for another year, with a lineup that includes 90s psychedelic band Kulashaker and Cornish sea shanty troubadours Fisherman’s Friends. The festival also stays true to its community roots, with plenty of space for local groups such as the Chalford Community Orchestra and Choir, Simbora and Third Cousin.

Julie Cull and the good people of Leonard Stanley invite everyone for a special celebration of community life. Attendees can expect a range of stalls, a fun dog show, classic cars and food and drink.

A central event in Frampton-on-Severn’s village fundraisers, the annual sheep racing brings together villagers and outsiders alike to place their bets on the fastest looking sheep, and enjoy the bar, barbecue, live music, stalls and entertainment. This year’s event once again also includes Shetland Pony racing.

Uley Brewery celebrates 40 years in business with a summer event featuring beers from the brewery, local food and drink from Quiggies Piggies and Kitchen Garden Pizza, live music from Ken Lush, Cat Amongst the Pigeons and a brewery Olympics.

Stroud Brewery brings together more than thirty local makers and crafters for a special market on the various levels of their Brimscombe building. Stalls include original artwork, fused glass decorations, vinyl records, houseplants and upcycled crafts.

Continuing this week

Beth Quarmby’s exhibition enters its second week in the gallery space at Lansdown Hall. Expect large-scale canvasses which take inspiration from the landscape and the wildness of the garden.

Further afield

Tracing its lineage back to the 1996 International Festival of the Sea, the Harbour Festival is a staple event in Bristol’s calendar. Expect musical acts and spectacular performances in and around Bristol’s Floating Harbour.
