What’s on in Stroud this week: 9 – 15 June

There’s plenty of artistic talent to celebrate in and around Stroud this week, with Site Festival kicking off two weekends of open studios and associated events, the Cotswold Sculptors Association exhibition continuing up at Miserden, and the Hide Artist Retreat in Amberley hosting a sculpture and installation showcase.

Plus, there’s a community cinema evening in Painswick, a ceilidh at Lansdown Hall and a Lion Hunt in Woodchester, as well as two free gigs on Saturday up at the Prince Albert. And if rural pursuits are more your thing, a bit further afield the Three Counties Show takes place in Malvern all weekend.

Regular and one off events

The Painswick Centre’s community cinema screens Edward Berger’s Academy Award winning adaptation of Robert Harris’s bestselling novel, Conclave. Tickets available in advance or on the door and include a small glass or wine, ale or a soft drink.

Stroud’s Festival of Commoning throws a family-friendly fundraising ceilidh at Lansdown Hall, with live music and dancing and pot-luck snacks for all.  All proceeds support the Festival of Commoning event in September.

Site Festival has been taking place since 1997, celebrating a range of creative talent up and down the Stroud Valleys. This year, more than 80 artists open their studios at 40 locations over two weekends, alongside an accompanying programme of events, exhibitions and talks.

Ten artists come together for the fourth annual outdoor sculpture show at the Hide Artist Retreat in Amberley. Responding to the theme of ‘adaptable matter’, the show offers emerging artists the chance to exhibit alongside established sculptors, partnering with two Gloucester youth charities to create collaborative sculptures.

The Friends of Woodchester Endowed School organise this special annual trail around the village, with participants helping hunt down specially-crafted lions at various locations. Alongside the hunt itself, the organisers are laying on a range of activities, with games, stalls, a bar, live music, country dancing, a bouncy castle, a barbecue and more.

Rodborough’s Prince Albert lays on a double header of free gigs, with drumming troupe Gantigan performing their uplifting djembe rhythms at 6pm and singer songwriter multi-instrumentalist George Montague at 8:30pm. Bring cash to throw in the hat and support the musicians.

Continuing this week

The Cotswold Sculptors Association host their annual exhibition in the Garden at Miserden, offering visitors the opportunity to see more than 120 sculptures set within the historic landscape. Plus, this Sat, 14 Jun, the Association will be holding a special demonstration day, with sculptors on hand to demonstrate how they create their work and talking visitors through their process.

Further afield

This annual celebration of rural life in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire has been taking place at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern for more than 65 years. Visitors can expect a range of countryside-inspired to see and do, from an on-site food and drink festival to parachute displays, tractor parades and a ‘Grand Parade’ of competing livestock.
