What’s on in Stroud this week: 2 – 8 June

Summer is here, and though the streak of unbroken sunshine may have come to an end, we Stroud folk don’t necessarily need the sun to have fun.

There’s plenty to see and do in Stroud this week, with TV historian David Olusoga coming to the Sub Rooms mid-week, a Friday evening with the finest male voice group ever to emerge from the north Wiltshire village of Ashton Keynes, and the Malty Story festival taking over Stroud Brewery all weekend.

On Saturday there’s a summer fayre out Chalford way, and a dog show in Stratford Park. Plus, if you love dinosaurs take the train to Gloucester for a special dino weekend in King’s Square.

Regular and one off events

Bristol-based academic and TV presenter Professor David Olusoga comes to the Sub Rooms for History’s Missing Chapters, a lecture examining how and why some events and some people are remembered while others are forgotten. Olusoga takes examples from the First and Second World War, the Industrial revolution and other key moments in history to uncover why some are celebrated whilst others lay on the cutting room floor of history.

Rich and Charlotte Taylor host multi-man-singing-experience the Magnificent AKs at Fresh Standard Brewery, for what promises to be an entertaining evening. The evening will be a poignant one as it would have been a home gig for Woodchester-based former member John Willoughby, who sadly passed away last year.

Stroud Brewery lays on a full weekend of entertainment over three days, with music from Neon Pumps, The Donnelly Sisters, Valley Steppas, Pebble Daisy and The Bob Porter. Plus, free kids entertainment from Silly Science, the Magnificent Mr Kai and Club Kids. All tickets on the door, many events free.

The parents and students of Chalford Hill Primary School host a fun-filled day for all the family with music, a barbecue, a bouncy castle, face painting, tea and cake and more. Plus, for the first time in a few years thirsty visitors can retire to the Old Neighbourhood afterwards.

Choreographer and percussionist Carli Jefferson and vocalist and researcher Clair Le Couteur bring their experimental ‘broken folk’ show to Uley. Expect harmonic singing, dance, acoustic beats, accordion, whistles and synth basslines.

Stroud Rotary Club hosts the Bark in Stratford Park fun dog show in the  top field at Stratford Park. All dogs are welcome for an event that promises to be even bigger and better than last year’s, raising money once for Aura’s Dogs UK.

Beginning this week

2025 Site Festival guest artist Risée Chaderton-Charles presents ‘Caribbean Atlantean’, an exhibition at the SVA John St Gallery, which brings together new works in digital collage, merging photography, digital illustration, text and watercolour. The works tell the stories of Africans who jumped from the slave ships, imagining that they found new life beneath the waves.

Further afield

Gloucester’s Kings Square hosts a special Dino-ROAR weekend with a giant stegosaurus, interactive walkabout dinosaurs and other dinosaur-themed entertainment. Highlights include the How To Train Your Dinosaur show and dino-baby feeding.
