Shortwood win 5-3 on penalties

Peter Beadle’s Shortwood United pulled off a dramatic FA Vase upset with a penalty shootout victory over Western League Premier Division side Street.

Goalkeeper Joe Wright was the hero for the Nailsworth club, producing crucial saves as Shortwood held their nerve to win 5–3 on penalties and book a second-round trip to Wessex League side Downton on November 8.

After last weekend’s abandoned fixture, Alfie Bradshaw was on target once again, putting Shortwood ahead in the 87th minute. But the hosts struck back at the death through Kyle Strange, forcing the game to penalties.

Shortwood made no mistake from the spot, with Bradshaw, Eliot King, Adi Adichareh, Benji Cronin and Harley Mulraney all converting. Former Forest Green Rovers defender Scott Laird fired over for Street, sealing the victory for Beadle’s side.
