What’s on in Stroud this week: 6 – 12 July

It’s high summer, and Stroud’s community event organisers are pulling out all the stops this weekend to deliver a bumper selection of things to do.

This week’s highlights include the return of Rodborough Fete, a special celebration at Bisley’s Greenshop, a rare family opening at Nailsworth Fire Station and a car boot sale at Stroud Brewery.

Plus, music at the Prince Albert and St Mary’s North Woodchester, and further afield a new flower show from the Royal Horticultural Society in South Gloucestershire and a medieval festival in Tewkesbury.

Find out more in our regular look at things coming up in Stroud and the wider district.

Regular and one off events

Bisley’s Greenshop, has been championing sustainable living, independent businesses and the local community since 1988, and this Saturday they are throwing a special celebration. The event brings together more than 15 local businesses, makers and community organisations, a treasure hunt, eco curling and a “pin the beanie hat on Roger” challenge throughout the day.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service invites the whole family to step into the boots of a real firefighter with exciting activities and live demonstrations throughout the day at Nailsworth Fire Station. Visitors are told to expect a day which includes demonstrations, a barbecue, raffle, games and more.

Rodborough Fete returns to the Butterrow West playing field following the reopening of the community hall, with music, a bouncy castle, games and food and drink. This year’s event will be raising funds for Rodborough Playgroup, celebrating more than 60 years of this important local educational institution.

Stroud-based friends Berta, Kim, Misha and Ruth bring their fiddle, double bass, accordion and vocal harmonies to the Prince Albert for Saturday night. Expect well-produced covers with an alt-country/ folk edge, with a healthy dose of pop and underground classic surprises in the mix.

Stroud Brewery car park is the venue for these occasional Sunday car boot sales, offering the chance to pick up a second hand bargain and enjoy good food and organic beer. Pre-booking is required for those planning to sell, at a cost of £5 per car, with all sellers to be in place before the event opens at 10am.

St Mary’s Church, North Woodchester, is the venue for this special summer concert led by Five Valleys musical powerhouse, the Nailsworth Silver Band, and also featuring music from feeder bands Nailsworth Academy Band and Nailsworth Brasshoppers. An afternoon kick-off means you can still get to bed on time and the event features refreshments and a raffle.

Also taking place this week

The Royal Horticultural Society bring one of their celebrated flower shows to Gloucestershire for five days this week. Popping up within the Badminton Estate, this brand new show promises the chance to explore award-winning designers’ Chelsea-style show garden, hear talks from well-known gardeners and enjoy live music, food, drink and shopping.

Further afield

Taking place annually since 1984, Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is the largest free medieval gathering in Europe, bringing together around 2,000 re-enactors, traders, entertainers, and visitors from around the world.  The weekend’s central event is the re-enactment of the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury, which takes place on the original battlefield on both Saturday and Sunday.
