How Stroud welcomed London comedy coach

MOST READ

From the bright lights of London to the rolling hills of Stroud, when Chris Head moved out the capital, he was looking for more than just a change of scenery – he was looking for funny people!

A seasoned stand-up comedy director, coach and author, Chris ran a stand-up course in London for twenty years. He said, “When we decided to move, I definitely wanted somewhere that would be receptive to my course. My partner Kate, who was born here, always said that Stroud has a vibrant, creative energy, and so I knew it would be the perfect place to find people who wanted to learn how to do comedy.”

Chris’s course is designed for everyone, from those who dream of gracing the stage to those simply looking to boost their confidence and unleash their inner comedian. The Sub Rooms, with its long history of hosting incredible performances, provided the perfect setting for this comedic journey.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing this popular course back to The Sub Rooms,” says Bev Tanner, venue manager at the Subs. “Stroud has such a creative spirit, and we know there’s a wealth of untapped comedic talent out there. This course isn’t just about telling jokes; it’s about building confidence, connecting with an audience, and having a lot of fun in the process.”

And while the thought of standing in front of a crowd might be daunting, Chris creates a supportive and encouraging environment where participants can discover their comedic voice.

“Many people are nervous when they first sign up,” Chris explains. “But the course isn’t about making you do something that doesn’t come naturally; it’s about bringing out your natural playfulness and funniness, and sharing that with an audience.”

The course covers everything from crafting jokes and developing stage presence to handling hecklers and finding your unique comedic style. It’s a chance to learn valuable skills, meet new people, and maybe even discover a hidden talent.

Participants often find the experience transformative. As one comedy course attendee put it, “Such an excellent stand up course!”. Carwyn Blayney, who has gone on to do comedy, continued, “Chris has you standing up holding a microphone in the very first session, so it’s very practical. A different aspect or style of stand up is covered every week, so you’re guaranteed to find your own thing at some point. The weekly homework builds up nicely for the final showcase. Whether you’re starting out, or if you’re already gigging and are after new material, this course is a brilliant place to turn.”

So, whether you’re a seasoned joke-teller or someone who’s always wanted to try stand-up, Chris Head’s course offers a chance to step into the spotlight and share your laughter with Stroud.
