Latest news from James Hilton, founder of Jim’s Gym
Staying active in later life is not always easy, but members of Jim’s Gym, an online fitness platform for over-55s, say it is helping them stay strong, independent and connected.
The virtual gym was founded in 2023 by Stroud-based personal trainer James Hilton. Through live and recorded classes, advice and a thriving online community, Jim’s Gym now supports hundreds of members in the UK and beyond.
“Fitness is about so much more than exercise” says James. “For people over 55, it’s about staying independent, keeping up with family, and having the confidence to keep doing the things you love. What makes Jim’s Gym special is the people in it. They motivate each other every single day.”
Iris, 83, Norfolk

At 83, Iris Welford knows what it means to face setbacks. After suddenly finding herself unable to walk and in excruciating pain, she spent weeks in bed relying on painkillers. “I literally stayed in bed for a month when even turning over hurt,” said Iris. “I had a walking stick and decided I must keep moving, as I had heard James say in the past.”
Joining Jim’s Gym gave her the confidence to move again. “I started with the seated classes and felt proud I could do them. I still can’t twist without pain but that doesn’t matter, because I can do a little more each time,” said Iris. “The difference is that the classes are for people like me – I don’t feel out of place or compared to younger, fitter people. And you can exercise in your pyjamas if you want!”
Jill, 67, Nottinghamshire

For Jill McLaughlin, being a grandma of seven means keeping fit is part of family life. “I’m much stronger since joining,” Jill said. “I can carry the little ones, lift them into cots, and even put cases into the overhead locker when travelling. Even shopping and gardening feel easier.”
Jill, who joined Jim’s Gym seven months ago, values the wide choice of classes. “James has done a fantastic job keeping everyone connected,” she said. “There’s no pressure, just a smile on your face while you exercise. It’s not just fitness, it’s mental wellbeing too.”
Jayne, 75, Carmarthenshire

For Jayne Roberts, Jim’s Gym is about much more than exercise. “Being a member has been such a joy. It’s a reason to get up, get my kit on, and exercise all done by 10am,” said Jayne.
She has also formed new friendships. “I met a lady through Jim’s Gym who has become a special friend. We’ve already spent a lovely day together and plan to meet again soon. My grandson calls her ‘Nannie’s new best friend’,” said Jayne.
Jayne has even used her fitness to support charity. Twice she has completed a squat challenge, once for Stand Up to Cancer and once for MND. “James even set up a special class to help me prepare. He didn’t have to, but that’s the sort of trainer he is,” said Jayne.
Frank and Ann, Lancashire

Husband and wife Frank and Ann Eastham have been active all their lives, but Jim’s Gym has given them something new to share together. Ann turned to the classes while recovering from two major abdominal surgeries, while Frank has found strength training helps with his running.
“Doing the classes as a couple is great for motivation. If one of us is feeling reluctant, the other provides the encouragement,” said Ann. “It’s so much easier to join a class from home. No travel, no excuses.”
Frank added “I still run parkruns and trail races, but the online strength work has made a big difference. It helps me keep competing, even in my 70s.”
James said “These stories show what fitness in later life is really about. Staying strong, building confidence, and enjoying life. Whether it’s playing with grandchildren, recovering from illness, or simply enjoying the company of others, the benefits go far beyond the physical.”
Jim’s Gym runs live and on-demand classes including Tai Chi, Pilates, Dancercise and Yoga, alongside strength training, nutrition advice, and a growing library of exercise videos. It also hosts a book club and art club to support wellbeing and connection.
In addition, the platform hosts a monthly nutrition talk with resident dietician Ian Thomas, and members can access free workouts in the Friends of Jim’s Gym Facebook group.
