Dr Simon Opher MP welcomes fall in inflation and support for families across Stroud

Dr Simon Opher MP has welcomed the latest fall in inflation, saying it is a sign that government action to ease pressures on household finances is beginning to have an effect for families across Stroud.

“Inflation falling to 2.8% is welcome news for families across Stroud. This was unexpected and it shows that government action to ease pressure on the cost of living crisis is beginning to have a real impact.

“But many people are still feeling the squeeze, and continued instability in the Middle East means the global economic picture remains uncertain. That is why further support announced by the Chancellor this week matters.

“The extension of the fuel duty cut until the end of the year will be welcome news for many local motorists, while the increase in the tax-free mileage allowance will help workers who rely on their own vehicles for work.

“Alongside this, the Government has launched the Great British Summer Savings scheme, designed to help families enjoy affordable days out while supporting local businesses and attractions.

“From 25 June until 1 September, VAT will be reduced on a range of eligible leisure and cultural activities. Here in Stroud, that could make a real difference. Families looking forward to a trip to Giffords Circus or Go Bananas will benefit from lower costs, while attractions such as WWT Slimbridge and Cattle Country will become more affordable.

“These are exactly the kinds of experiences people should not have to give up during difficult economic times. They support our wellbeing, bring communities together, and sustain local jobs.

“The scheme is also being backed by free bus travel for children aged 5–15 across England this August, helping families get out and enjoy everything our area has to offer.

“I still believe we could be even bolder. In the Australian state of Victoria, public transport has been made free. Imagine the benefits that could bring here.”
