Ofsted applauds Archway School’s strong foundations and drive for excellence

Ofsted has published Archway School’s latest report following an inspection under the new national framework in April. The report recognises the many strengths already in place, alongside clear and important priorities for further improvement.

Inspectors highlighted two areas as particular strengths; pupil safety and personal development. Safeguarding was described as highly effective, with a strong culture in which concerns are dealt with promptly and students feel safe and well cared for. Students also benefit from a broad, well‑structured curriculum and a rich personal development programme that supports respect, relationships, safety and preparation for life beyond school.

Inspectors also noted that the school environment, with most students behaving well and responding positively to expectations. Relationships between staff and students were described as strong and bullying or discrimination is not tolerated. The school’s commitment to inclusion was also recognised, ensuring that disadvantaged students and those with SEND are supported to access the full range of opportunities on offer.

At the same time, the report is clear about the areas that need further improvement. These include ensuring greater consistency in teaching, strengthening support for students with SEND, and improving attendance. The school is approaching these challenges with full transparency and determination, with all of these priorities having already been identified by leaders as central to the development work already underway.

Under the new OFSTED framework, a ‘Needs Attention’ judgement reflects a stricter national standard rather than a decline in school performance. It means that improvements are in progress but not yet fully embedded and doesn’t mean that the school is underperforming overall.

Headteacher James Woollin said: “The report rightly recognises the many strengths of Archway School, such as our strong relationships and commitment to student support, as well as the areas where we need to do better. We are addressing these challenges directly and with purpose. Since arriving at the school in September, standards are already improving and we now have a solid platform to accelerate this progress. I am proud of the commitment shown by our staff and students, and I am confident about the direction we are heading.”

Although Archway School is implementing changes to address the areas identified for improvement, Mr Woollin is clear that this work will not change their core values as a proudly comprehensive school, bringing together students with diverse backgrounds and talents to create an inclusive and collaborative learning community built on relational practice and a commitment to developing the whole person. Archway offers a full seven‑year journey supported by a broad and balanced curriculum, a varied extra‑curricular programme, and well‑resourced facilities that enrich learning across subjects. Families are warmly invited to experience this first hand at the Open Evening on 17 June, where they can meet staff, explore the site and see the strengths and improvements shaping Archway’s future.
