What’s on in Stroud this week: 22  – 28 June

It’s the last full week of June, and it’s forecast to be a scorcher, but Stroud’s event organisers remain committed to making sure we all have a good time.

This week’s highlights include a new show from Stroud vocal supergroup, the Caw, folk-rock from Palestinian musician Zaid Hilal, a celebration of local music venues at the Prince Albert and an enamelling workshop in Chalford.

Find out more in our regular look at things coming up in Stroud and the wider district.

Regular and one off events

Traditional Cotswold Morris dancing sides Miserden Morris and Lassington Oak Morris come together for a midsummer dance out at the Carpenters Arms in Miserden. Expect a special evening outside this traditional and unpretentious 17th century Cotswold pub.

Palestinian singer and composer Zaid Hilal brings his spellbinding folk-rock to Stroud Brewery for a midweek show. Born in Bethlehem, Hilal prides himself on not only preserving Palestinian heritage but building upon it, reflecting the present story of his people.

Rodborough’s best pub hosts two nights of gigs for the Everywhere’s At Once national event supported by The National Lottery and the Music Venue Trust, beginning on Friday with local musicians Bosstrich and Pebble Daisy. Together with other promoters in Stroud, Lotte and Miles are raising funds for Trans Ark Collective, and Saturday night’s headliners are gay Cardiff punks Acts of Gross Indecency.

Stroud vocal supergroup the Caw perform their new show, The Space Between Us, in the Sanctuary at Brimscombe Mills. Attendees are told to expect soaring harmonies, rich textures and music that resonates beyond the final notes.

Master enameller Kath Williams leads a full day introductory course, offering the chance to learn and experiment with a range of enamelling techniques. In the afternoon, participants will design and create their own framed enamel artwork or enamelled jewellery to take home.

Stroud Society of Model Engineers invite one and all to the lakeside track in Stratford Park for rides-by-donation. The 850ft, 5″ and 3.5″ gauge track was constructed by volunteers in the late-1970s and early-1980s and riders pass over hand-built bridges and through a tunnel behind one of the society members’ miniature engines.

Continuing this week

Gallery Pangolin’s Stroud Sensation exhibition brings together work from twelve Stroud sculptors, featuring works in bronze, ceramic, stone, glass, sound, fabric, feather, stitch and assemblage. The show includes work from Woolpack owner Daniel Chadwick, consumption critic Abigail Fallis, stone sculptor Kim Francis and Björk collaborator James Merry.

Further afield

The world’s largest dedicated history festival takes place each June across 70 acres of Wiltshire countryside in Broad Chalke near Salisbury. Events on site include talks, discussions, music and immersive experiences with this year’s lineup including Alan Titchmarsh, Anthony Scaramucci, historic sailmaker Sarah Liscoe and tribute band ABBA’s Angels.
