Forest Green Rovers have announced that they will not participate in the National League Cup during the upcoming season.
Club officials pointed to both the financial burden of participation and a congested schedule as the primary reasons for withdrawing from the competition.
Robbie Savage’s side took part in the competition last term, where they were drawn in a group featuring Premier League 2 sides Wolverhampton Wanderers U21s, West Bromwich Albion U21s and Leicester City U21s. The competition provided valuable opportunities for several academy prospects, with a number of young players gaining first-team experience.
The competition also afforded Rovers the chance to sign loanee Harry Whitwell, who impressed during Forest Green’s clash against West Brom’s youngsters.
However, the club has now opted against entering the competition for the 2026/27 campaign as it looks to prioritise its commitments elsewhere.
A club spokesperson said: “FGR have confirmed to the National League that we will not be taking part in the National League Cup this season.
“After careful consideration, the club feels our focus and resources are best directed towards our objectives in the National League, FA Cup and FA Trophy.
“The significant operational costs involved, alongside an already packed fixture schedule, were key factors in reaching this decision.
“We look forward to a busy and exciting season ahead, and thank you for your continued support.”
The decision means Forest Green will concentrate their efforts on league action and the two major knockout competitions as they aim to build on last season’s progress and challenge at the top end of the National League.
