Hospice launches new way of creating a memorial for loved ones

MOST READ

People can create a lasting memorial for loved ones in a new remembrance garden, set in the grounds of Longfield Community Hospice in Minchinhampton. Donate to Longfield and they will arrange for a heart-shaped plaque to be inscribed with up to 15 words about someone you will never forget.

The new memorial garden is part of the hospice’s Every Heart Tells a Story appeal, designed to help you share a little about what made your loved one unique. Each plaque will be displayed in the garden for posterity, creating a reflective and calming space full of stories about the people closest to our hearts.

Ruth Wilkinson describes her Dad, Kevin Wilkinson, as “unique, warm, caring, loving and funny – everything you would want in a Dad.” A well-travelled man and prolific writer, Kevin also gave back to his community through a number of volunteering roles, including at Longfield. His plaque reads: Kevin Wilkinson – forever with us, forever loved. Proud Longfield Hospice volunteer for 15 years.

“We love the idea of remembering Dad in this way,” says Ruth. “His ashes have been scattered at sea, so this heart is a lasting tribute to someone we want people to remember – in a place that holds memories of him. It’s also a special way to support Longfield’s incredible work.”

You can create a heart plaque for anyone – whether they have a link to Longfield or not. Visit your loved ones’ plaque whenever feels meaningful to you, the grounds of the hospice remain open all year round.

“There’s something inherently special about reading memorial plaques and thinking about the people they represent,” said Longfield’s Mark Jeffries. “Our new garden will create space to reflect and remember. What’s more, all the donations received from Every Heart Tells a Story will help us continue to provide hospice care for local families.”
