Robbie Savage reveals why Forest Green moved for experienced former Arsenal, West Brom and Altrincham goalkeeper Ethan Ross

Forest Green manager Robbie Savage says new signing Ethan Ross will bring “a wealth of experience” and healthy competition to his squad after the goalkeeper joined the club on a one-year deal.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed this afternoon, Savage said: “Ethan has been training with us over the past week. He is a fantastic goalkeeper and brings a wealth of experience at this level, adding real competition to Pags ( Fiachra Pagel) and Luke (McNicholas). I can’t wait to see him in match action.”

The 29-year-old goalkeeper becomes Rovers’ latest addition ahead of the 2026/27 National League campaign and has been handed the club’s number one shirt.

Standing at 6ft 5in, Ross began his youth career at Arsenal before joining West Bromwich Albion, where he progressed through the club’s academy system and gained senior experience on loan with Worcester City and Redditch United.

After leaving the Baggies, he signed for Colchester United in 2018, making 10 appearances and spending time on loan at Maidenhead United.

Ross moved to Lincoln City in 2020 before enjoying a successful loan spell at Weymouth, where he made 26 appearances and kept six clean sheets.

He joined Stockport County the following year and played his part as the Hatters won the National League title and returned to the Football League, making nine appearances in all competitions.

Loan spells at York City and Altrincham followed before Ross made the move to Altrincham permanent in October 2023. He went on to make 65 appearances, keep 19 clean sheets and help the Robins reach the National League play-offs.

A serious knee injury in 2025 kept him out for an extended period, and he was released by Altrincham following the expiry of his contract this summer.

Ross becomes Rovers’ eighth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Kyle Ajayi, Bryan Ifeanyi, Oli Ewing, James Berry, Emeka Obi and Sydney Agina.
