Stroud Times sports editor Ash Loveridge gives his verdict on his leading contenders to become Forest Green Rovers’ next manager.
With the New Lawn hierarchy no doubt sifting through a stack of applications, we could get some clarity on who will succeed Robbie Savage before Rovers return to action against Hartlepool this weekend.
But who are the genuine front-runners — and who could emerge as a surprise contender?
STUART MAYNARD
I believe Stuart Maynard will cast his net higher than the National League.
The bookmakers’ favourite to become the next Forest Green manager, Maynard has proved himself at this level by leading York City to League Two and is surely on the radar of a number of clubs higher up the pyramid.
He deserves that chance.
MARK HUGHES
The links are clearly obvious, having worked with Rovers sporting director Mark Bowen at the likes of Manchester City, Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers.
But for now, it appears the Manchester United legend is taking a sabbatical from football following his exit from Carlisle United.
His appointment would certainly be eye-catching and would generate plenty of attention across the football world.
IAN HOLLOWAY
This type of appointment would raise eyebrows, but with his huge profile, the current Swindon Town boss would certainly suit Forest Green’s penchant for larger-than-life characters.
Ollie has experience in spades, from the Premier League to League Two, and knows the lower leagues inside out.
His recent “dead man walking” rant went viral during his pre-match press conference last week, but he remains intent on finding success at Swindon Town.
He is also no stranger to pressure, scrutiny or big personalities — would it be a left-field appointment? Absolutely.
Would it be interesting? Without doubt and from a media point of view it would be box office.
GRAHAM DEAKIN & ALEX MEECHAN
Forest Green are a club steeped in left-field moments and, as the name of the entrance to the ground suggests, could once again take Another Way.
This duo are currently riding high with Northern Premier League side Stafford Rangers — and, of course, Meechan is a Forest Green legend.
Meechan enjoyed a considerable playing career in the Football League, turning out for both Swindon Town and Bristol City, before moving into management.
He gained managerial experience at Barrow and has also served as assistant manager at AFC Telford.
It would certainly be an unconventional appointment, but then again, Forest Green have never been afraid to do things differently.
