A peace rally will take place in Stroud on Saturday against the recent right-wing rioting that has erupted across the country.
The event is open to all the community from noon on Saturday on the green outside Ecotricity HQ at Wallbridge.
Anti-immigration groups have hit dozens of locations throughout the country following a week of rioting and disorder driven by misinformation over a stabbing attack that killed three girls in the seaside community of Southport, with social media users falsely identifying the suspect as an immigrant and a Muslim.
Organiser Jagdish Patel said: “The Stroud Love Not Hate Rally is a community event for people to stand in solidarity with people that are currently being affected by racial violence perpetrated by far-right rioters.”
A wide cross section of speakers from the political, faith and community spectrum will address the rally, including, Simon Opher MP, Pete Kennedy (Deputy Leader of Stroud District Council), Midge Purcell Stroud Against Racism, Simon Helme (Dursley Tabernacle), Robin Ellis Cockcroft (The RYSE),
Andy Woolley (Stroud TUC), Jeremy Green (Stroud Jewish organisation, Na’amod), Robin Layfield (Community Independents), Jagdish Patel, Stroud Love Music Hate Racism.
The Red Band will be on hand to provide music for the rally.
There is no on-site parking and organisers encourage people to walk, cycle or use public transport.
