‘Be kind’ plea as district NHS staff suffer abuse from frustrated patients

People are being asked to show kindness to NHS staff as reports of verbal abuse rise.

The minor injuries and illness unit at Stroud Hospital is currently closed to walk-in patients, but the Trust has reported incidents of people arriving at the unit and becoming aggressive or abusive towards NHS staff when they have become aware of the temporary changes to the service.

The Trust is asking people to book by calling NHS 111 or by calling the unit directly on 0300 421 8884.

John Trevains, Director of Nursing at Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are doing everything we can to publicise these temporary changes and the reason for them, and we will continue to do so.

“We understand that it can be frustrating for visitors at what may be a stressful time for them, but we also expect our staff to be treated with care and respect.

“The NHS is still under a lot of pressure from the ongoing impact of covid and our staff are working incredibly hard – so they greatly appreciate the patience and consideration that most people show them.”

The rebuild is part of a £2m project, including a full rebuild of Jubilee Ward, which will change the room layouts.

Work is expected to be completed in early 2022.
