Brimscombe Port development delay

Stroud District Council and developer St Modwen Homes insist they remain committed to building a new canal side community in the heart of the Golden Valley.

Despite tougher national economic conditions, the next public consultation on the updated proposals on the exciting vision for the brownfield site at Brimscombe Port is expected to take place after the summer holidays.

“We and St Modwen Homes continue to progress the Brimscombe Port development – demolition is complete, St Modwen Homes has been selected, and we are all committed to carrying out further public consultation,” said Stroud District Council Leader Catherine Braun.

“As with many major brownfield redevelopment programmes, it is taking longer than originally anticipated – it’s a difficult site with a legacy of contamination, and a canal basin which forms part of the planned Cotswold Canals restoration.”

The scheme , new energy efficient homes with a mix of tenures, including affordable housing, to meet the current housing needs, new visitor and community facilities to create an exciting destination at the eastern end of the canal and new habitats to enhance biodiversity and bring nature into the site.

“The current challenging market conditions and inflationary pressures, which are particularly difficult for the construction sector, and have arisen since the selection of St Modwen Homes, have set a further test, all of which has led to some delays to the initial programme,” said SDC Deputy Leader, Natalie Bennett.

“However, the council has been working closely with St Modwen Homes on the plans to bring forward this exciting development to realise our vision for the site. We all remain excited about the future of the project, which will be transformational for the local area and look forward to sharing the dates for the public consultation in due course.”
