Cinema review: Ryan Gosling takes us to the stars in Project Hail Mary

2026 has been relatively quiet when it comes to blockbuster releases, especially compared to the usual flood of highly anticipated films.

Most of the year’s big spectacles are being saved for the latter months. Yet one movie that has already been generating serious buzz from both critics and audiences is Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi adaptation starring Ryan Gosling.

Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, the film follows Dr. Ryland Grace, who wakes up alone on a spacecraft millions of light-years from Earth. Plagued by amnesia, he can’t remember how he got there. What he does recall, faintly, is that Earth’s sun is dying due to an alien bacteria—and he has been sent on a mission to save it before it’s too late.

Without giving too much away, the story unfolds with twists, discoveries, and moments of both tension and wonder. Ryan Gosling delivers one of his most compelling performances to date, and when combined with the film’s stunning visual effects and cinematography, Project Hail Mary emerges as arguably the best movie of 2026 so far—a must-watch for anyone in the mood for an immersive sci-fi adventure.
