Clare Honeyfield column: better rituals, better life

MOST READ

It’s that time of the year when everyone is talking about cleaning, decluttering and organising, but what happens when we apply these principles to our habits? Not just our home and possessions?

If our lives reflect the habits we adopt, is living in a world of ‘mass distraction’ the biggest challenge we face to building a better life?

I have found comfort in laziness, mess and clutter at many points in my life.

Choosing different actions demands a degree of commitment to change, to getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and with having a clear outcome in mind. Even if that outcome is just being curious about how my life might expand if I do things differently.

The more curious I get about how habits shape my day, the more new daily wellbeing hacks I have the courage to introduce into my life, and the better I generally feel.

Ritual and healthy habits create a feeling of spaciousness and possibility, remembering that I am capable of more than I imagine, taking time to visualise the kind of life I aspire to, and of course creating space to appreciate everything I have. Which is in many ways a reflection of the beliefs and habits I have already adopted.

And you know who believes in you more when you show up for yourself? You do.
