Fiat are back with a bang and in theory should win big in the electric car market with the launch of the new Grande Panda. With prices set to be under £22,000, this latest version will be one of the cheapest EV’s available and an obvious choice for anyone looking to make the switch to electric, writes Nick Ponting.
Sharing the same platform as other Stellantis group models, such as the Citroen e-C3, the Grande Panda will offer versatility with its electric and mild-hybrid powertrain options.
The electric version will arrive with a 44 kWh battery and 83 kW electric motor, and a claimed range of over 195 miles (320 km) on a single charge, making it ideal for city trips and the odd weekend getaway.
A feature which hasn’t been seen since the Renault Twizzy and Citroen AMI is the built in tethered spiral charging cable hidden away at the front of the car. Simple yet so effective and If Citroen, Renault and Fiat can do it, why can’t the others?
As well as the built in cable, the 111-hp electric motor is mounted at the front and will undoubtedly offer the usual punch from an EV, while the compact design pays homage to its roots with subtle nods to the iconic styling. Additionally, a mild-hybrid option will be available, combining a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a total power output of 99bhp and 120Nm of torque.
The interior is equally as funky as the exterior with a colourful 10.25-inch infotainment screen and 10-inch instrument display.
Deliveries will begin early next year and according to Fiat prices will start from around £15,000 for a petrol model and about £22,000 as an EV.
So, if you’re looking for a compact EV with a half decent range, which (in the right colour) will stand out for the right reasons, I think it’s safe to say this would be a pretty good choice.
