Fire lit sparks fresh warning amid wildfire fears

A fire has been discovered on Selsley Common, apparently lit on top of one of Gloucestershire’s most important prehistoric monuments, prompting renewed calls for visitors to help protect the countryside during the current hot, dry weather.

The incident comes despite widespread publicity about devastating wildfires across Europe and a recent appeal by the National Trust Cotswolds urging people to take extra care on the commons.

The fire appears to have been lit on The Toots, a prehistoric long barrow and Scheduled Monument. The nationally significant archaeological site has survived for thousands of years and is legally protected because of its historic importance.

Stroud District Council said it was deeply disappointing to find evidence of a fire at the site, particularly given the heightened wildfire risk.

A council spokesperson said: “Fires, barbecues and camping stoves are prohibited on the commons throughout the year. During prolonged dry spells, even a small spark can ignite grassland, putting wildlife, grazing livestock, fragile habitats, historic landmarks and nearby communities at risk.

“Visitors enjoying the commons this summer are being urged to help prevent fires by packing picnics instead of barbecues, taking all litter home, disposing of cigarettes and vapes responsibly, and leaving no trace of their visit.”
