Historic Nympsfield pub saved

The Rose & Crown Inn in Nympsfield has entered a new chapter in its 300-year history after being officially purchased by a local community group.

Nympsfield Community Pub Limited completed the purchase on 30 January 2026, making the Rose & Crown community-owned for the first time since it was established in the early 18th century.

The acquisition follows several years of fundraising, volunteer effort and negotiations aimed at securing the future of the village pub as a community asset.

Planning permission and listed building consent for renovation works were approved by Stroud District Council on Christmas Eve, clearing the way for essential restoration. Preparatory work is already underway, with the group meeting contractors and developing specifications for electrical, plumbing, heating and roofing works. A detailed renovation timetable will be announced once contractors are appointed.

Strong local support has played a key role in the project’s success. A “pop-in pub” event held in December attracted a large turnout and helped the group reach its £19,000 Stroud Funding target, unlocking an additional £8,000 pledge from Stroud District Council. The campaign was backed by 168 individual supporters.

Further funding progress includes a £1,000 grant from the Gloucestershire County Council Grassroots Neighbourhood Fund. The group is also finalising a grant application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which includes funding towards reroofing the historic building.

The community group also paid tribute to supporter Winnie Morgan, who passed away in December. Funeral donations made in her memory will contribute to the restoration of the pub.

Nympsfield Community Pub Limited plans to reopen the Rose & Crown as a sustainable, inclusive village pub, restoring its role as a social hub for the local community.
