Living in Stonehouse

Stonehouse is a town situated about nine miles to the south of Gloucester city centre and four miles to the west of central Stroud. Stonehouse encompasses the sub-villages of Bridgend to the south and Ryeford to the east.

Stonehouse, once a quaint agricultural town recognized for its two water mills and vast vineyard, has transformed into a bustling industrial centre, boasting a multitude of enterprises, dining establishments, and retail outlets. Its convenient rail link to London and proximity to the recently revitalised canal render Stonehouse an appealing choice for those seeking to relocate near Stroud.

There are many footpaths and lanes in the town that lead to the Stroudwater Navigation. The Cotswold Canals Trust is working hard to restore the canal and there is active progress being made with plans to extend it to Saul Junction where it will meet the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.

In 2021, the new railway bridge at ‘The Ocean’ and the A38 roundabout near Fromebridge Mill were both finished. Once all the planned work is done, boats will be able to travel from Saul Junction to the centre of Stroud. Additional work is required to connect this route from Stroud to the River Thames.

Stonehouse is home to two primary schools: Park Infant School, which serves students from reception to year two, and Park Junior School, which accommodates students from years three to six. Maidenhill School, located in the northeast of the town, is a comprehensive secondary school for 11-16-year-olds.

Wycliffe College, a private school, is situated in Stonehouse. The college includes a preparatory school campus on Ebley Road, which houses a nursery school, and a large senior campus nearby.
