The head of Stroud High School went to Downing Street with MP Siobhan Baillie recently to attend the Community Education Champions Reception.
Mark McShane was nominated by Ms Baillie for his dedication to education with the theme for the event ‘Helping every child reach their potential’.
He met with the schools minister Damian Hinds and also with other champions from across the country who were also being recognised for their work.
He said: “It was great to be able to spend time talking about education and the Stroud area with Siobhan and the minister.
“Alongside open and frank discussions about educational funding, we were able to talk about national issues such as the current consultation on guidance for schools for Gender Questioning Students, the challenges facing child mental health services as well as very local issues, about how we can get young people to respect our surroundings in Stroud such as the canal paths.”
Ms Baillie added: “I was really pleased Mark was able to come and be honoured for what he does so well.
“I could have happily nominated every headteacher in the district so it was difficult to choose only two, including Archway head Kieron Smith, who was unable to attend. I have been to Stroud High many times and I am always impressed with the leadership and how pupils are listened to and able to give their views and campaign so freely on issues that concern them like highlighting the sexual harassment they receive in uniform.
“I have a great deal of respect for the tireless commitment that our teachers give to local children and families. It is important that they receive my thanks and praise from senior government ministers.”
