During her visit to mark the official opening of The Five Valleys Shopping Centre, Dame Joanna invited the people of Stroud to join her in sending warm wishes to the beloved broadcaster and natural historian. Accompanied by Stroud Times videographer Matt Bigwood, the TV and film legend delivered an impromptu message that captured the deep admiration felt across the nation.

Speaking directly to camera, she said: “Hello, Sir David, this is Joanna Lumley. Your birthday is approaching, and I know you absolutely hate emotional guff… but actually, I couldn’t resist it. Because we all called you God. And we love you very, very much indeed. I’m here in Stroud, and I just want you to listen to this.”

She then turned to the gathered crowd, adding: “David, Stroud loves you, I love you. Happy birthday.”

The spontaneous tribute reflects the profound impact Sir David Attenborough has had on generations through his groundbreaking work in natural history broadcasting and environmental advocacy.
