Stroud RFC shine at Gloucester Defender Rising Stars Cup

Hundreds of aspiring young rugby players gathered at Cheltenham Tigers RFC for the Defender Rising Stars Cup, hosted by Gloucester Rugby in partnership with PREM Rugby.

Twenty-three grassroots clubs from across the southwest, including Stroud RFC, participated in a day of competitive rugby showcasing the passion and commitment of the region’s next generation of players.

The annual festival for Under-11s and Under-12s is part of a nationwide series organized by PREM Rugby clubs, giving young players the chance to experience professional-style competition against teams beyond their local area.

Under-11s teams were judged on rugby’s core values — teamwork, respect, enjoyment, and discipline — emphasizing development and participation over match results. Many youngsters were playing on a club pitch for the first time, cheered on by proud parents and coaches, demonstrating determination, flair, and camaraderie.

Gloucester Rugby star Cam Jordan commented: “What a great day of rugby at the Gloucester Defender Rising Stars Cup. It was impressive to see so many young players display skill and passion for the game, working together as a team and showing respect for the officials and the competition. Despite being at the start of their rugby journeys, seeing so many kids displaying the values of our game will only benefit the future of our sport. Competitions such as this help young players grow and develop into the next generation of players.”

Since the first Defender Rising Stars Festival in 2008, more than 125,000 children have participated, with some advancing to professional play for PREM Rugby clubs.

Reflecting on the day, Stroud RFC Under-12 player Barney Bushell said: “I think it’s been a really good day. We had a tough group and did really well. It was a good atmosphere and a nice venue.” Coach Luke Russell added: “The lads have had a great time and it’s been well organised. The standard was good. We win most of our games, but we haven’t won all our games today so I think it’s worked out well. We’ve played some old foes and some new teams, so it’s been great.”
