What’s on in Stroud this week: 10 – 16 March
Spring is here and there’s plenty happening in Stroud this week. From Stroud Film Festival to Greek food at the Retreat and live folk music at the Long Table, there is no shortage of things to see and do.
Plus charcoal making at Voltaire’s Wood, a celebration of the nightingale at the Trinity Rooms and roller skating at Stroud Brewery.

Regular and one off events
- Eat Greek food at the Retreat – Tue 11 Mar, 6:30pm
28 Church Street goes Greek for the evening, with a special pop-up Greek street food night courtesy of Emily Davis’ Ember Events. Expect gyros with a side of calamari, with a mezze platter to start if you’re feeling particularly hungry.
- Watch Maidaan at Stroud Brewery – Tue 11 Mar, 7:30pm
Stroud Film Festival continues with a screening of Amit Ravindernath Sharma’s Indian sports drama Maidaan. The 2024 Hindi film explores the golden era of Indian football from 1952 to 1962, in scenes based on the life of Indian football team coach-manager, Syed Abdul Rahim, known as the architect of modern Indian football.
- Watch Goblin Band at the Long Table – Fri 14 Mar, 6pm for 7pm
London-based folkers and Finger-in-the-Spring-veterans Goblin Band come to the Long Table for one night only, playing alongside Bristol / Stroud based Welsh/ English folk band Craven. Book early to secure your place at what is set to be a captivating night out.
- Make charcoal at West Rugger’s Green – Sat 15 & Sun 16 Mar, all day
Join Voltaire’s Wood and West Rugger’s Green for a two-day deep-dive into traditional charcoal making. The team will guide participants through the process via this hands-on course taking in everything from the long history of charcoal making to making the product itself, and marketing and selling charcoal.
- Celebrate the nightingale at Trinity Rooms – Sat 15 Mar, 7:30pm
This special event for Stroud Film Festival offers a celebration of the nightingale in aid of Stroud Valleys Project and Trinity Rooms Community Hub. We are promised a special piece from award-winning professional dance artist Marie-Louise Flexen, a screening of folk musician Sam Lee’s acclaimed film Singing with Nightingales and a chat from the British Trust for Ornithology’s Gordon Kirk.
- Learn roller skate dance – Sun 16 Mar, 4pm
Stroud Skate Crew veteran Chantelle leads a special adult class upstairs at Stroud Brewery, teaching some core roller skating dance moves. Participants are promised that go-to moves like dribbling and crazy legs will be broken down then speeded up to allow those that need them to build up a tool kit of moves to add color and variety to routines.

A special solo exhibition at Gallery Pangolin brings together sculpture, prints, paintings, collage and jewellery by Breon O’Casey, the twentieth century artist associated with the Cornish St Ives School.

- Watch the horses at the Cheltenham Festival – Tue 11 – Fri 14 Mar
One of the biggest horse racing festivals in the whole of Cheltenham returns for its annual four-day run, with the tweed coat wearing masses flocking to Cheltenham Racecourse to watch an event that is second only to the Grand National in terms of prize money. Attendees may be pleased to hear that the much-reported Guinness crisis appears to have abated, with thousands of kegs crossing the Irish Sea in time for an event which sees more than 200,000 pints consumed.
