Tributes have poured in for footballer Rod Thomas, who has died at the age of of 78.
Thomas enjoyed a distinguished playing career spanning nearly two decades, representing clubs including Swindon Town, Derby County, Cardiff City, and Gloucester City, as well as earning 50 caps for the Welsh national team.
Highly respected both on and off the pitch, he was also known for his talent as a cricketer, playing for Slad Exiles, and for a time served as the landlord of the Foston’s Ash pub near Stroud after retiring from professional football in 1982.
Born in Glynncorwg, Wales, Thomas his footballing career in the youth at Gloucester City. The defender made 10 appearances for the Tigers before signing for Swindon Town in 1964.
Thomas made almost 300 appearances and was a part of the Swindon team that won the League Cup in 1969, defeating Arsenal 3-1 in extra time at Wembley Stadium.
He signed for Brian Clough’s Derby County in 1973, joining Derby County, making almost 100 appearances for the Rams and was a part of the Derby squad that won the First Division in the 1974-75 season under Dave Mackay.
He joined Cardiff City in 1977, and then returned to his first club, Gloucester City, before some brief spells at Newport County, Bath City and Barry Town.
His old club Swindon posted a tribute and called him a “dedicated and talented footballer”.
Swindon said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Rod Thomas.
“Rod was a dedicated and talented footballer whose commitment, character, and love for the game left a lasting mark on everyone. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
In a Derby statement confirming the news, the club said: “It is with great sadness that Derby Couty has learned of the passing of its former player Rod Thomas at the age of 78.
“Derby County’s deepest condolences and thoughts are with Rod’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
The club noted how Thomas had attended a 50-year anniversary celebrating their First Division triumph earlier this year.
Gloucester City posted a heartfelt message on their former player: “It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of former player and Gloucester City legend Rod Thomas, at the age of 78. Rod Thomas started his career with us and went on to represent Wales, making 50 appearances for his country.
“Our thoughts are with Rod’s family and friends at this time.”
Frocester cricket chairman and former Forest Green and Shortwood manager John Evans said: “Sad news, good cricketer too. RIP Rod.”
Former Bath City goalkeeper David Mogg said:” Had a couple of games for us at Bath City back in the 80s.”
Gloucester City stalwart Kenny Blackburn said: “So very sad, pleasure to play with him…sincere condolences to all the family. RIP Legend.”
