What’s on in Stroud this week: 10 – 16 August
It’s a big week for Stroud, with the outdoor pool finally reopening on Saturday, after significant efforts by the Stroud District Council team to get it ready.
Elsewhere, summer holiday activities continue to abound, with medieval activities at the Museum in the Park, open gardens at Richmond Villages in Painswick and a falconry display at Berkeley Castle.

Regular and one off events
- Spend a medieval day at the Museum in the Park – Wed 12 Aug, 10.30am – 3.30pm
The Museum in the Park’s bumper programme of summer holiday activities continues with a special medieval day of activities. Meet characters from medieval England, design your own coat of arms or pennant flag and learn how to fight like a knight with the helpful museum team.
- Explore the gardens at Richmond Villages Painswick – Thu 13 Aug, 10am – 3pm
Painswick’s premier retirement community opens its four acres of formal lawns and borders to visitors. Planted for year-round interest on the southern slopes of the town, the gardens boast a varied mix of herbaceous perennials and shrubs, and include a wildflower meadow, fruit trees and herbs.
- Play backgammon at the Crown and Sceptre – Thu 13 Aug, 7.30pm
Every second Thursday of the month is Backgammon Night at the Crown and Sceptre on Horns Road, with everyone welcome to come along and play. Bring your own board, or use one of the pub’s.
- Keep the faith with Stroud Brewery’s Northern Soul night – Fri 14 Aug, 7pm
DJs Tony Soulprano, Roger Tovell and Kev Stone bring their rare 45s and soul floor-fillers to Stroud Brewery, for Stroud’s latest tribute to the legacy of Wigan Casino. Attendees are told to expect fast beats, rare grooves, and that electric energy.
- Celebrate the reopening of Stroud Outdoor Pool – Sat 15 Aug, 9am
Following a high-profile local campaign, Stroud Outdoor Pool, also known as Stratford Park Lido is scheduled to reopen this Saturday, 15 August, and the weather forecasters have laid on suitable weather. Book to avoid disappointment as sunny school holiday sessions are bound to be popular.
- Enjoy a jazz Sunday lunch at Burleigh Court – Sun 16 Aug, 1 – 3pm
Burleigh Court hotel’s monthly Sunday Jazz Lunches continue, this month with Gloucestershire jazz trip Utrillo playing live from the lounge, with grand piano and bass drifting through the house. We are promised a seasonal Sunday lunch menu, expertly prepared by Burleigh Court’s on-site chefs with valley views and good wine.

- Meet the falcons at Berkeley Castle – Every Tue in Aug
Every Tuesday until the end of August, Berkeley Castle is offering visitors a falconry display alongside entry to the Castle. In addition to live falconry, there will also be a chance to meet and talk to the falconer about his birds and the role they played in medieval times.

- Attend Fairford Steam Show – Sat 15 – Sun 16 Aug
Fairford Steam, Classic and Retro Show returns to the Lake Field this Saturday and Sunday, with a special bonus steam vehicle gathering in Fairford Market Place from 5pm on Friday to kick off the event. Expect traction engines and other steam, retro and classic vehicles alongside trade stalls and a beer and music tent.
